Sirva Soundbites - The FM Journey: Why Intercultural Training is Critical for Employee-Centered Mobility
Are your global mobility programmes and relocation services actually setting employees up to succeed, or just getting them from point A to B?
On the latest episode of Sirva Soundbites, host Brenda Bellon, Global Director of Intercultural at Sirva, speaks with Suzie Chapman, Staff Vice President, Global Mobility at FM, about why intercultural training sits at the centre of FM's global mobility services support, even while they are under pressure to cut costs.

A Personal Case for Intercultural Training
Suzie's conviction started with her own experience. Early in her career, she delivered system training in Singapore using a style she describes as "very New York and very American." It didn't land. Two weeks in, a local leader gave her an informal cultural training session over lunch, a reset she still credits today.
Why Cutting Intercultural Training Doesn't Pay Off
When companies consider replacing training with self-serve tools to cut costs, Suzie's response is direct: trimming intercultural training is "a rounding error" against the total cost of relocation services. The real return comes from employees ramping up faster, a difference she says can double or triple the cost saved by cutting intercultural training.
Repatriation Deserves the Same Attention
FM added repatriation training after hearing a consistent pattern in employee feedback: people were coming home with new skills and, in Suzie's words, "no place to put them." Coming home isn't automatically the easy part.
Applying it to Relocation into India
As FM scales its presence in India, intercultural training has extended beyond just expatriates. A dedicated "Doing Business in India" programme and an ambassador model now support leaders and teams working with India-based colleagues, not just those relocating there.
The Takeaway
Intercultural training isn't just a discretionary add-on to relocation services. It's what determines whether the rest of a global mobility programme actually works. Listen to the full conversation between Brenda Bellon and Suzie Chapman on Sirva Soundbites, wherever you get your podcasts.
