Supporting Relocating Employees When Online Cultural Resources Aren't Enough

Online cultural resources can be helpful, but relocating employees and families need guidance, conversation, and practical support to turn information into confidence while on assignment.

Global Mobility teams often balance a few important priorities at once: supporting employees well, helping drive assignment success, and managing costs responsibly. That is why online intercultural tools can be so appealing. They are accessible, easy to share, and can give employees helpful, reliable information when they need it. But online intercultural tools are only one part of the picture. This article takes a look at where these tools are helpful, where they may not be enough on their own, and why live intercultural training still matters.

Where Online Tools Add Value

Most of us like being able to find answers quickly. If we are moving to a new country or working with people in a different culture, it is natural to look things up: How do meetings work there? What should I know about communication styles? What might feel different day to day? A good online tool can make that search much easier by bringing reliable, organised information into one place. For companies, it can also be a practical way to offer support while keeping programme costs in mind.

For employees and families on assignment, that kind of resource can be genuinely useful. It can answer common questions, offer reassurance, and give people a place to turn during the early stages of a move, when there is a lot to take in. An employee may be wondering why a meeting felt awkward, how feedback is usually given in the host location, or whether what they are feeling is a normal part of culture shock. In those moments, easy access to clear information can help.

When Online Access Alone Is Not Enough

The challenge is that even the best resource only helps if people use it. And in real life, employees are busy. They are managing work, family, logistics, new routines, and the mental load that comes with transition. Even when a tool is useful, it can easily get lost in the noise. When an online resource is offered on its own, usage can be very low, sometimes less than 5%. That leads to a fair question for companies: is this support actually helping people prepare, or is it simply available if they happen to find time for it?

Why Cultural Training Still Needs a Human Touch

Live intercultural training meets a different need. An online platform can provide information, but a trainer helps people make sense of that information and connect it to their own circumstances. The conversation becomes personal. Participants can ask questions, talk through real examples, and think about how they will handle the moments they are most likely to face on assignment.

In a training session, employees can explore what may feel unfamiliar, reflect on their own habits and expectations, and consider how their communication or leadership style may come across in a new setting. They can also raise the questions that do not always fit neatly into an online search. The guidance can be shaped around their role, destination, family needs, past experience, and the realities of the assignment ahead.

That is where the learning becomes more meaningful. The goal is not to memorise a list of "do's and don'ts." It is to understand what may be behind certain behaviours, how to adapt without feeling inauthentic, and how to build trust in a new environment. A trainer can help employees pause, test their assumptions, and practise different ways to respond before they are in the middle of a high-stakes moment.

Two professionals work together on a project

This kind of support also needs to be viewed in proportion to the overall cost of the assignment. Cost matters, of course, but it is helpful to look at that cost in a wider context. In one long-term assignment cost model, a three-year assignment was estimated to cost about USD $3 million, with roughly $2 million spent in the first year alone. Compared with that overall cost, intercultural training for the employee, partner, and children represented about 0.02% of the total cost. When that training is paired with access to an online tool, and when the tool is used before and after training, the support becomes more useful and more likely to be used.

The simple truth is that companies send people to new places to work with other people. Digital tools can make the experience better, but they cannot replace the human conversations that help people build confidence and judgement. Employees need more than information. They need a way to understand what is happening around them, adjust with care, and build strong working relationships in moments that are often subtle, complex, and very human.

The Best Cultural Training Support is a Blended Approach

For organisations, choosing the type of support to offer does not have to be an either-or decision. A self-guided intercultural tool can be a valuable resource, especially when it is part of the larger support for the assignment. Live training helps bring that resource to life by making it relevant, personal, and easier to apply. The goal is not simply to provide access to cultural information; it is to help employees use that information with confidence. Together, online tools and live intercultural training can help employees and families navigate transition more thoughtfully, build stronger relationships, and work more confidently in their new environment.
